Disorders, hearing loss, expressive language impairment, psychosocial deprivation, autism, selective autism, receptive aphasia, and cerebral palsy are all conditions that can impede the development of speech. Delays in language development or maturation can cause speech delay disorder.

Although they have the capacity to acquire a language from birth, children also need to pick up the language(s) spoken by their environment and family. Learning a language requires patience, as children reach language and speech milestones at varying speeds. Even children who are typically developing may have trouble picking up certain sounds, words, or sentences. Most children, however, can speak fluently by the time they are five years old.
