The child's ability, degree of aptitude, and level of communication skills are based on the most obvious indicators of a language delay. Each child has a developmental milestone that they must reach, and if they have not grown as much as other kids their age, a language delay may be present. Some indications of speech and language difficulties are listed below:
• A small vocabulary
• Stuttering, fillers (i.e., umm), and the use of more generic words like "stuff" and "things" instead of more precise ones
• Repetition of phrases (echolalia)
• Difficulty understanding what other people are saying
• Trouble following instructions and directions
• Late to start talking and not speak until they are two years old
• Talking gibberish sounds
• Inability to describe stories
• Frustration over an inability to express thoughts
• Lack of grammar knowledge
• Confusing verbs and overuse of important phrases
• Inability to handle problems verbally may lead to violent behaviour
• Understanding and retention of reading materials
• Following verbal or written instructions
• Reading and comprehension
• Recognising letters, numbers, and the alphabet;
• mixing up letter and number order, especially when it comes to songs, rhymes, and phone numbers;
• responding to sound or vocalising;
• continuing to use gestures at the age of two and later.
