Most children with speech and/or language disorders are treated with speech-language therapy.
What Exactly Are Speech Disorders?
A speech disorder is a problem with sound production. Speech disorders include the following:
Articulation disorders: Articulation disorders are problems with making syllable sounds or saying words incorrectly to the point where listeners cannot understand what is being said.
Fluency disorders: Fluency disorders include stuttering, which occurs when the flow of speech is disrupted by unusual stops, partial-word repetitions ("b-b-boy"), or prolonging sounds and syllables (sssssnake).
Resonance or voice disorders: These are issues with the pitch, volume, or quality of the voice that cause listeners to become distracted from what is being said. These disorders may also cause a child to experience pain or discomfort when speaking.
